Female activist still unaccounted for

Sergewa
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has severely condemned the continuing disappearance of Siham Sergewa, an elected member of the House of Representatives.

Six months ago, she was seized at night from her home in the heavily fortified Buhedima District of Benghazi, and since that violent abduction, her fate remains unknown.

In a statement, UNSMIL disclosed that it continues to follow up “on her enforced disappearance and reiterates that the authorities in eastern Libya are responsible for respecting international human rights law and are legally obliged to establish her fate and whereabouts.

“That her enforced disappearance constitutes an attempt to silence one of Libya’s prominent female voices and to intimidate others seeking to participate in the country's political life.

“That violence against women in politics also threatens gender equality and the building of robust and resilient democratic institutions.

“The UN condemns her abduction and disappearance and demands her immediate release as well as those of all victims of forced disappearance and also that those responsible be held accountable.”

We do hope so too.
