Like father, like daughter: Ras Kimono's daughter spits fire

Late Kimono (left) and Oge
Before the November 16, 2019 Kogi State, Nigeria gubernatorial election, most people didn’t know Natasha Akpoti.
But in the run-up to the election, people got to start seeing her as a gubernatorial candidate who fought for her rights to contest in the face of all the odds stacked against her that led to her having to protest as well as battle in court.

And in an interview she granted the BBC, she spoke of what she went through, the abuse she suffered and other injustices all because she was a woman who dared to aspire to become governor.

She didn’t win the election but her BBC documentary has gone viral and has been eliciting different reactions, one of which is from Oge Kimono, the daughter of the late firebrand reggae musician, Ras Kimono.

Spitting fire, Oge, who’s also a performing reggae musician like her father, reacted just the way her father would have done by posting the message below on a WhatsApp group, a message that not only spoke out in encouragement of Akpoti but also against the bad governance in the country and didn’t care whose ox will be gored by it.
Akpoti
“At this point this is the time Nigerian women should rise up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

“Enough of bad governance!

“Enough of intimidation!

“Enough of marginalization!

“Enough of gender discrimination!

“Enough of misappropriation of government funds by politricians who are meant to be public servants to each and every citizen of this country!

“How can we call ourselves civilized when we are still mentally enslaved.

“How can a woman who has contributed to the growth of the country’s economy be shamed and booed like a criminal when the actual criminals are being celebrated and awarded with undeserving accolades ... How??? How can we stand as WOMEN and watch on the sidelines while our BELOVED COUNTRY perishes in shambles and mediocrity yet we are the giver of LIVES!!! Can we say we have done well? Can we say that we the MOTHERS of all these political tyrants, thugs, armed robbers, animals, have done a good job raising THESE MEN we call SONS, HUSBANDS AND FATHERS??? I call on EVERY WOMAN who stands for the TRUTH, JUSTICE, GROWTH, PEACE and PROGRESS OF THIS NATION to RISE UP and SPEAK UP without FEAR! How many of us can they really kill when we demand for accountability??? How many of us can they really kill when we speak up and speak the truth??? Passing a bill of a death penalty for hate speech (truth) shouldn’t scare none of us. The borders are closed and the festive periods are fast approaching. OUR HUSBANDS will expect that the 20,000 naira they gave us last Christmas for the upkeep of the home should also be enough this year. Maybe this time reverse should be the case. They should go shopping by themselves and make sure they get everything on our list. For how long shall we continue like this? This is the time to RISE UP!!!

“This is the time to SPEAK UP!!!

“This is the time to SAVE OUR LAND!!!

“This is the time to TAKE ACTION!!!

“MY NAME IS OGE KIMONO AND I AM A NIGERIAN CITIZEN THAT DESERVES AN ACCOUNTABLE LEADER!!!”
