Will Olu Maintain too swallow his pride … and return to Puffy Tee?

Almost imperceptibly, music artists who blew big-time after working with certain producers and then ditched those producers have started returning to them as virtually all of them, except for Timaya, suffered a decline in their careers after ditching the producers who made them. The names of artists who ditched their producers is not a secret. Some of the most popular among them are 9ice, Timaya, AY.com and Iyanya. If you’re familiar with the four artists mentioned above, you’ll know that all four of them became successful only because they each worked with a producer who understood them and was thereby able to produce their music successfully. In the case of Timaya, he was discovered in Port Harcourt by the acclaimed K-Solo who brought him to Lagos and accommodated him in his studio where he recorded Timaya’s debut album, True Story , which became very successful. But how did Timaya pay him back after a while. Simple answer. He walked away from K-Solo without whom he might ne

Tribute to talented drummer-singer Willie Bestman

The sad reality of life is that we will all die. And one person who has faced that sad reality is extremely talented drummer and singer Willie Bestman who passed on in February. Though it’s always being advocated that people should be celebrated while still alive, Bestman was not someone that could be fully or really celebrated while alive because he wasn’t so successful, and in a nation that celebrates only mainstream success, Bestman was swept by the side. And that’s the paradox of life. By virtue of his immense music talent, he should have been well celebrated, but he wasn’t, and he should have achieved quite a lot, but he didn’t, maybe because he was blind. And that’s another of life’s paradoxes. While blindness helped Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Cobhams become major league celebrities, it can be argued that blindness had the opposite effect on Bestman. He wasn’t born blind, and when he related the story of how he became blind to this reporter many years ago in his Ojue

Legendary thespian, Ade Love, resurrects for Ambode …as APC Lagos guber candidate dreams big for the arts

As the Saturday April 11 governorship and states’ House of Assembly election draws near, multiple award-winning actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has endorsed the candidacy of the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, with a new production. Afolayan’s endorsement comes through a new smash-hit television commercial in Yoruba language, in which the celebrated filmmaker used footage from “Ija Ominira”, the popular movie shot in 1978 by his late father, Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love).  Described as a blast from the past mixed with contemporary reality, Afolayan’s 60-second production used the goje musical instrument together with the traditional chant of Ajobiewe, the talented actor and poet, to spice up the creative appearance he made with his father, who passed on in 1992. The message in the production is simple: Lagos is working because it has built on the solid foundation laid since 1999 and, therefore, deserves to continue with that

Fear of Buhari makes Maheeda change tactics

Controversial entertainer, Maheeda, is not one to ever let an opportunity to make news pass her by. Since her major way of making news is posting salacious pictures of herself online, especially those in which she’s near naked or teasingly nude, she has posted new pictures in which she’s dressed in the Islamic style and the pictures are already trending. According to her: “As Buhari win so, my dressing don change.” While Maheeda’s action might be innocent, and in fact seems innocent, some are already saying that it’s fear of the new president of Nigeria who is believed to be a no-nonsense man that has driven her to change her picture posting mode to a more serious one.

Buhari victory makes N7m for Tonto Dike

Without a doubt, there have been many losers and winners in the presidential and national assembly elections held last weekend. While the primary losers and winners are the politicians who contested for the elective offices, there have been other winners and losers, members of the general public who gambled on the outcomes of some of the positions contested for. And it seems actress-singer Tonto Dike is one of those who speculated on the outcome of the presidential election itself as she took to social media to tell the whole world that she won N7m in standing by her belief that General Muhammadu Buhari would win over President Goodluck Jonathan. According to her post: “Awwwwww, my heart is joyed. I didn’t sell my voice nor choice nor vote. Off the record, I just won N7m on Mr President.” If this is indeed true, Tonto, start expecting calls from people expecting their share of your windfall oh.

JJC headlines Afrobeats Live in London

Highly rated Nigerian rapper-singer-producer-director JJC has been penciled down as the headliner of Afrobeats Live which will hold in London next month at The Jazz café. Afrobeats Live will also host ten of the UK’s finest emerging artists but will also bring to the stage and further prove to the world that afrobeat music has become a movement in the UK. Afrobeat’s meteoric rise in the UK’s musical landscape in recent years can be attributed to a number of factors including the vision of AL’s headliner, JJC Skillz, who pioneered a movement sixteen years ago that has shaped careers of some of the scene’s biggest stars including D’Banj, Don Jazzy, Moe Musa, platinum selling UK pop group Big Brovas, and many more. Afrobeats Live is a quarterly live music event and the most notable and first UK platform that shines the spotlight on the growing indigenous afrobeat musicians. Hosted by popular Capital Xtra radio presenter Abrantee, he will be introducing some of the UK’s rising sta

Cynthia Morgan flourishes as Jhybo languishes

Nowadays, Cynthia Morgan is one of Nigeria’s female artists with a respectable modicum of presence. But a few years ago, the reverse was the case. And in fact, the success she’s enjoying currently began with her featuring on Jhybo’s Run Their Mouth. Though her vocal performance as well as beauty greatly aided the success of the song which earned her and Jhybo some fame back then, the fact right now is that her career is blossoming while Jyhbo’s isn’t. And considering that Jhybo helped her break into the industry by featuring her, now she’s doing very well, isn’t it perhaps time she repays him by featuring him on one of her songs and videos as well? Over to you, Cynthia.

Can Now Muzik tame wild Kelly Hansome?

Just last week, Oseyiza Oogbodo Blog listed Maga Don Pay singer, Kelly Hansome, as one of the entertainers struggling to remain relevant in the Nigerian entertainment industry. And how did the singer-producer respond? By signing a management deal with highly rated music and events management firm, Now Muzik. The partnership is no doubt a palatable proposition, because Kelly is very talented, and NM is very versed in entertainment management, and so they should make a resounding success of their union, and that’s why the news of the partnership is trending, because the industry is expecting tangible results from it. It’s just noteworthy however to mention that going by Kelly’s precedent, which saw him walking out of his previous contracts with Myke Records and Kennis Music, then there’s fire on the mountain.

Davido roasted in Kenya

The story of Davido’s career can best be told as up today, down tomorrow. One step forward, two steps backward. And if not for the fact that he has too much money backing him up, he might have even gone under totally. Anyway, the unsavoury gist about him right now that he performed in Kenya last weekend but rather than being praised by Kenyans for his performance, they instead berated him, claiming his performance was nothing to write home about. The Aye singer might just need to step up his game as many criticisms are coming his way nowadays. And since the criticisms are not even of his personal life, but his musical abilities, he has to be extra careful.

Woman gives birth to twins on the road in front of First Bank

There have been stories of women who gave birth in unusual situations and places like in an aeroplane, on the way to the farm, in a commercial transport bus, in the market, and so on. The latest of such must just be the one that happened around 8am on Friday, March 20 th the street in front of First Bank at the Apongbon end of Broad Street in which 38-year-old Esther Ami gave birth to twin girls. Speaking with Oseyiza Oogbodo Blog , Ami recounted what led to her giving birth on the street. “All through the night, I was in pain and I was just waiting for the morning to come so I could go to the hospital. And we were on the way to the hospital and we were in front of First bank when I felt as if I wanted to give birth so I told my sister that was with me that we should just wait a bit. “Then suddenly, I felt a sort of release in my body and when I reached down with my hand to investigate, I felt I was holding something and I called my sister and said I’m holding something but I d

Arik Air raises millions for sickle cell disorder

Arik Air has raised over five million naira for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Nigeria to continue with its sickle cell disorder intervention work. The sum was raised in just five months beginning October 2014. Speaking with Oseyiza Oogbodo Blog during a media parley by SCFN to inform the nation that Arik Air is helping in the battle against sickle cell disorder, Siva Ramachandran, Arik Air’s Senior Vice President – Commercial, said they decided to help SCFN raise money through donations by their passengers when they found out that sickle cell disorder is a huge burden on Nigeria. “When we had the first meeting with SCFN, we didn’t know much about sickle cell disorder. But after they explained all about it to us, and how many children are born yearly with it, we realised it needs urgent attention as it affects generations so we must find a way to control it. And as a responsible airline, we must support it so we decided on a constant rather than one-time support.” Also speaking
