Communique proposes lasting solutions for Burundi peace

A consultation in Arusha, Tanzania has issued a communique entitled Sustainable Peace in Burundi. The meeting, organized by the World Council of Churches and the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, drew together Burundian religious leaders on 18-19 October. Representatives from the Roman Catholic Church, National Council of Churches of Burundi, Council of Union of Christian Churches, Islamic Community of Burundi, Confederation of Church and Revival of Burundi, and Seventh Day Adventist Church attended the consultation.

South Africa, Iran to host business forum in Pretoria

Jacob Zuma, South Africa President The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) together with their Iranian counterparts will host the South Africa-Iran Business Forum at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) offices in Pretoria on Monday, 23 October 2017 from 9am. The forum will be held on the margins of the Joint Commission co-chaired by the Minister of DIRCO, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and her Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif.

On 15 November IDFA 2017 will open with the world première of Mohamed Siam’s Ama l. This film was made with support from the IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) and attracted finance at the IDFA Forum, making it a great example of what IDFA is all about. With the IDFA Bertha Fund celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and the IDFA Forum now in its 25th edition, IDFA can justifiably be seen as a catalyst for the development, finance and distribution of creative documentaries worldwide.

MRA inducts NIMC into the FOI Hall of Shame

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has inducted the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) too into its Freedom of Information (FOI) Hall of Shame, saying it was recognizing the agency for its determined efforts to undermine the effectiveness of the FOI Act, 2011. MRA accused the Commission of failing to comply with its duties and obligations under the FOI Act, including the most simple and straightforward aspects of the law that do not present any implementation challenges or that would cost it nothing to comply with.

Harris Internet artist Jonathan Harris will be this year’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) guest of honor. Harris is one of the most significant artists and innovators to emerge in the digital era. He has achieved widespread recognition for projects such as the interactive We Feel Fine, The Whale Hunt and I Love Your Work. During the DocLab program Uncharted Rituals, IDFA will present the world’s first ever retrospective of Harris’ work in an exhibition space specially constructed for the purpose in Amsterdam’s De Brakke Grond venue.
