Short Story Galore 9
The man hanging around
Bamidele-Thorpe Plaza was conspicuous in a suspicious manner though he was well
dressed and young and had an innocent look.
People hurried up and down in
front of him but paid him no attention, except the security men on duty at the
Plaza. There were four of them monitoring the entrance, and the senior said to
one of the juniors, “That guy has been standing there for quite some time now.”
The guard got to his feet. “I’ll
talk to him, sir.”

Just then, a spotless white
chauffeur-driven BMW arrived and the gate was quickly opened for it.
The young man waited till the BMW
was in the premises, then he walked away briskly and was lost to the guard’s
view before the latter had taken even three steps toward him.
Ten minutes later, he stepped
into a booth and dialled.

Femi Bamidele-Thorpe climbed out
of the 750 when it came to a halt in one of the three parking spaces reserved
for him alone.
He was attired in an expensive
black Oriental suit and carried his own briefcase. He accessed the interior
through the main entrance and got to his private lift amid “Good morning, sirs”
which he acknowledged by waving and smiling.
He unlocked the elevator with a
key, entered the cage and pressed the button for the top floor. When there, he
strode down the passage to the door set in the face of the far wall.

He was a man who could be hard
when he had to be and polite when the situation warranted so he knocked on his
own office door.
“Come in.”
He went in.
His secretary got to her feet.
“Good morning, sir.”
“Morning, Miss Caleb.”
“Your briefcase, sir.”
He handed it to her and in his
plush inner sanctuary, she set it on his side desk and exited.
