Coronavirus knocks out BAL
Coronavirus is not smiling.
When it began in Wuhan, China in
December 2019, it seemed it would be just a China thing but it’s spreading by
the day and beginning to disrupt schedules.
The much-anticipated Basketball
Africa League (BAL) (https://www.theBAL.com/) is one schedule
it has definitely disrupted as its inaugural season, which was scheduled to tip
off Friday, March 13 in Dakar, Senegal, as had to be postponed.
Explaining the postponement, BAL
president, Amadou Gallo Fall, said, “Following the recommendation of the
Senegalese government regarding the escalating health concerns related to the
coronavirus, the BAL inaugural season will be postponed. I’m disappointed we’re
not able to tip off this historic league as scheduled but look forward to its
highly-anticipated launch at a later date.”
BAL, a partnership between the
International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the NBA, is a new professional
league featuring 12 club teams from across Africa.
It builds on the foundation of
club competitions FIBA has organized in Africa and marks the NBA’s first
collaboration to operate a league outside North America.
NIKE and Jordan Brand are the exclusive
on-court outfitter of the new professional league.
