One way Nigeria is indeed anti-Islam
Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria |
If there’s one term that’s gradually becoming legendary in Nigeria, it’s “Anti-Islam.”
And the person making it a front
burner, Professor Ishaq Akintola, Group Director, Muslim Rights Concern
(MURIC), is gradually becoming a legend as he deserves for his tenacity.
Akintola is definitely a likeable
person for his commitment to his cause. He perceives injustices against his beloved
religion, Islam, and fearlessly advocates against them and for this, he
deserves nothing but commendation.
Commendation because there’s no Christian in Nigeria fighting for the
rights of Nigeria’s Christians!
How sad!
If there’s such a Christian, he
or she should come out so I can eat my words.
With Akintola’s anti-Islam
efforts in my face practically every day, it was only a matter of time before
it would definitely inspire me too the way it does him.
And it has made me realize at
least one way Nigeria is truly anti-Islam and that doesn’t seem to have
occurred to him so I’m a step ahead of him in this regard so he should thank me
for pointing it out to him and I hope he’ll take Nigeria up immediately on it
but I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t for reasons I won’t advance now.
Friday is the main worship day of
Muslims just like Sunday is that of Christians. While Christians have Sunday as
an officially work-free day, Muslims don’t for Friday and this is definitely
anti-Islam and the Nigerian government should address it immediately by
declaring Friday work-free.
Akintola’s anti-Islam sentiments
and perceptions aren’t bad because they only make it obvious that it’s truly
every man for himself in this world. You don’t expect a Muslim to be fighting
for Christian rights, right?
So Friday should be work-free in
recognition of Muslim rights and Nigerians going to work on Fridays only
further proves that our government is insensitive and not in tune with Nigerian
needs.
The Monday-Friday work week as
imposed on us by our colonial masters was good for them because they imported
it from their own country’s system which allowed it because it was basically a
single religion system.
And if it was once good for
Nigeria (which it never was), it isn’t anymore and should be scrapped
immediately as our two main religions, Christianity and Islam, have to be taken
into consideration regarding every single government decision.
So, just as Europe, America
prefer the Monday-Friday work system because their religion used to be centered
on Christianity, Saudi Arabia and other countries that favor Islam as their
main religion do not observe Sunday as a work-free day.
Rather, they go to work very
happily on Sundays and I’m sure Sunday is the day they devote their most energy
to work.
Regarding this salient issue
which is necessary to be addressed immediately if we are to ever move forward (as
we claim to desire) from the deadly passivity we’re already caught in by
practicing the two religions, it simply means that we’ve to honour them both by
declaring their official worship days as work-free.
Saying that making Friday work-free
will disturb the work routine is not tenable as every problem has a solution,
especially this one that demands for it urgently.
Thereby, for Friday to be made
work-free, the simple solution is for people to go to work Monday-Thursday and
Saturday or there should just be the Monday-Thursday work week alone.
This second alternative is even
better for us as a nation that has very low life expectancy as it will help to
make us live longer.
Over to you, Prof.
