The sun was on its way to its setting place for the night and the day was consequently growing darker as the big grey roan colt galloped up the little hill and came to a halt on its peak as the rider pulled on the reins.
The colt shifted from one foot to the other and its
hairy tail swished away a couple of flies which flocked around it.
The dark-skinned horse rider leaned forward over the
beast’s neck and fed a lump of sugar with a dark-skinned hand to it.
Immediately, it stopped its rocking as it snacked on
the delicacy.
The rider shifted his Stetson from the top of his
head to the back and looked all around him as far as his eyes could see with a
little smile at the corner of his lips and eyes.
The perimeter brick fencing that was nearly nine feet
high surrounded the whole estate and was horizontal at some points and curved
at some to accommodate nature.
Over the big, double metal gates was a big neon tube
that had blinked on because of the coming night and which proclaimed boldly:
ROGER WEST MEAT RANCH
MEXICO CITY – VERACRUZ HIGHWAY
MEXICO
There was a driveway that led from the gates to the
farmhouse, a big wooden building with a porch, a little corral at the back for
tethering horses and not far from it was a little cottage which housed its
servants.
The fruits orchard was directly behind the servants’
cottage in a green meadow with a little pool of water at its back.
To the west of the estate was the barn for the
storage of straw and wood and by its right was the stable for breeding horses
for sale.
He could see the cattle, sheep and goat pens, pigsty,
poultry house and the pond at the far south of the estate where the ducks flocked
and competed with the fish for edibles.
The south-west of the estate was a big meadow full of
green grass where the animals grazed and stretched their legs in turn.
The little hill where the horse stood was right in
the center of the whole estate.
The rider of the horse, El West, took a last quick
glance around.
