Making headway in the entertainment industry is not an easy task.
It’s so difficult to become a
successful entertainer that many entertainers aspiring to success become
frustrated and change their views along the way.
The legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti
is one such entertainer.
Many people don’t know it, but
there was a time Fela, already a musician, never even smoked cigarettes, how

Anyway, Fela started taking

realizing it, he made it part of his image and it made him distinct.
The long and short of this is
that entertainers get to a point whereby they really want to stand out among
their colleagues and attract attention to themselves and they resort to
sometimes seemingly crazy tactics to do so.

Desperate to become popular,
realizing that his other strategies were failing, he went for a style of
dressing that made him seem like a mad man.
Society initially condemned him,
but they kept talking about him because he persisted, and now he’s known all
over Africa.
And after playing in the
entertainment game for some time now, and realizing that they will have to go
the extra mile, four of Nigeria’s most promising female singers, Cynthia
Morgan, Yemi Alade, Seyi Shay and Victoria Kimani have employed a not-too-crazy
tactic to get noticed.
The four now wear loud colour
hair styles that would make anyone spot them from quite a distance.
Morgan is like the trailblazer
among the four.
Suddenly, she went from her usual
black to red hair and when her name was mentioned, people would say ‘the girl
with the red hair’ or ask ‘if it was the girl with the red hair.’
Donning red hair has actually
worked for Morgan’s brand.
Though her songs and videos are
average, her red hair has helped her music circulate more, believe it or not,
and has even helped her start getting shows she wasn’t before because show
organizers know that when she steps on stage with her red hair, she’s known.
And seeing that Morgan was
stealing a lot of thunder with her red hair, Johnny singer, Yemi Alade, concluded that she had to employ the
same ploy fast, but she knew she couldn’t go the red route so she opted for
blue instead.
Blue is of course another loud
colour, so instantly she appeared in public sporting blue hair, people started
talking more about her immediately and she now stands out easily anywhere she
is because she’s probably the only one with blue hair in the entertainment
game.
Like Morgan and Alade, Seyi Shay
too is presently using a bold hair colour to sell her brand.
She favours the white blond
colour and when you see her anywhere, you just can’t help but notice her hair.
Also like Morgan and Alade, more
people now know her because of her hair colour change and she’s smiling to the
bank as well.
On-air personality Stephanie
Coker went down the green lane when she premiered her bold colour hair back in
May.
She went green because she knew
full well Alade, Morgan and Shay had staked their claim to some other colours and
if she chose any of theirs, she would be labelled a copycat.
So she went for green, trended
immediately and she must also be very happy with herself now for applying the
strategy which had worked very well for others.
Finally, we come to Show singer, Victoria Kimani, who has
now gone for orange hair.
There’s no need to wonder why she
went for it.
It’s not because she wants to be seen
as fashionable. No. The only reason she’s done it is because she’s struggled
for some time with her music career and now that things want to start looking
up for her musically, she has to push herself further with a notice-me
strategy.
So when you see these girls who
are sporting these gaudy hair, don’t think they are unserious or have a screw
loose upstairs because they are just trying to survive and make another buck.
