Togo outpaces Nigeria in salient race
Nigeria’s West Africa neighbor,
Togo, has sprinted ahead of it in a salient race.
With climate change’s devastating
effects highlighting the mandatory need for the world to embrace renewable
energy, serious countries have stepped up their efforts in that regard.
So while Nigeria is supposed to
be the Giant of Africa and therefore West Africa’s most important nation, it’s
not Nigeria building Africa or West Africa’s biggest solar power plant but Togo
doing so, albeit for the West Africa region.
Work has begun already on its
50mw Mohamed Bin Zayed Photovoltaic Solar Power Complex which is West Africa’s
largest ongoing solar PV project, and supports Togo’s ambitions to increase its
rural electrification rate to 50% by 2022 and 100% by 2030.
Oh well, we can only hope that Nigeria
which is supposed to be the pacesetter in these sorts of projects in West
Africa and Africa overall will soon begin to do so.
