YALDA, AfCFTA, others entice young Africans
And Africa as an important part
of the world is not immune to this inescapable fact.
It’s no doubt for this salient
reason that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) act which was set
up with the primary objective of making life better for all Africans has now
decided to target young people in order to better achieve its objective.
As its name aptly implies, the
AfCFTA is about trade without borders all over Africa.
And to get Africa’s young ones to
buy into it fully, the Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa
(YALDA) in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
Secretariat, Afreximbank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa
(UNECA), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the UN Development Programme
(UNDP) is inviting all youths who are nationals of African countries as well as
those in the Diaspora with African citizenship to submit essays, infographics
and animation on the topic: “The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA):
What is in it for young Africans?”
The creative competition aims to
break information asymmetry among the youth on the AfCFTA and promote a
bottom-up approach to the policy formulation and implementation by harnessing
innovative youth-driven solutions that will contribute to active youth
engagement in the popularization of the AfCFTA.
The winning essay writer and
infographics and animation creators will each receive a prize of $1,000. The
essay winner will also receive a paid internship with one of the partner
institutions, while the others will receive design contracts with other
partners among other prizes.
YALDA together with its partners recognize
the critical role of competitions and challenges in awakening the consciousness
and inventiveness of the youth to contribute content that can further propel
their own understanding of AfCFTA instruments.
The competition requires
participants aged between 18 and 35 years to either create infographics,
animation or write essays and other creative content on the potential impact of
the AfCFTA on youth in Africa.
The content should display
ingenuity in communicating the AfCFTA to young people by breaking down its elements
into simple and easy to understand content for their peers.
The competition is expected to
run from 31 July 2021 to November 2021 when the winners will be announced.
YALDA is an international
non-profit organization that was established by a group of Harvard University
students in September 2004. Its mission is anchored on a strong desire to
achieve development on the African continent not only through collaboration
between university students and other youth but by also creating long-lasting
networks between the young leaders and leading professionals worldwide.
