Why Fela called me a stupid boy –Yomi Peters
Peters |
Sensational juju musician, Yomi
Peters, has revealed that the legendary musician, Fela, called him a stupid boy
the last time they met.
According to Peters, who is the
creator of juju shuffle and co-creator of Shina Peters' afro juju, he and
Obesere went to visit Fela at his Afrika Shrine and they got talking about
music, marijuana and all that.
And when he disclosed that he
doesn't smoke marijuana yet he sings and plays instruments, Fela was sceptical.
So Fela told his boys to bring a
guitar so Peters could prove he could play. Happily, Peters played the guitar
perfectly and Fela then tested him further by requesting him to play the
keyboard.
When he did as well dexterously,
and then requested himself for a talking drum so he could display his skill on
it too, Fela said, “I believe you can play it too, stupid boy.”
But ever the enigma and leader,
Fela still had the last word. He said music is a profession patronised by
smokers, fornicators, drinkers and that when they come to see a musician
perform, it's better if that musician also does all those things as well so
there will be a kindred spirit.
