He devoured the tasty combination
in no time and paid cash for it.
Back in the office, he draped his
jacket over the back of his chair before he settled down comfortably to read
his letters while his stomach’s and other enzymes digested the food.
The scrawl of his name and postal
address on the face of the first envelope had already alerted him to who the
writer was. He opened it and was proved right.

My dear son, Wilfred.
How’re you and how’s work? How’re your friends and Lagos life?
I hope there are no problems, excepting minor ones which really don’t
matter and I’m sure there aren’t any major ones or we would have heard as our
people say that when we don’t hear from each other, it means everything is
going well.
Time is of the essence so I won’t waste it on frivolities. You might
have guessed, and if you have, then you’re right as my main purpose of writing
this letter is to remind you of your duties.
Your parents have been dead for ten years now, and as our village
traditions demand, you are to remember them, so that their time on earth will
not be in vain and forgotten just like
that when they have a seed in the person of you.
As you must know from the exact time your parents died, and from my
last letter to you to which you replied me you were ready and capable, the
ceremonies must not be performed later than the first market day of next month.
Being their only child, the bulk of the responsibilities fall on your
shoulders but we’re happy that you constantly prove your capabilities and that
you’re indeed your father’s son so we are expecting you any time from now to
come and start the preparations.
Also, the matter of a wife I’ve been discussing with you since. I’ve
never told you this before but your parents were actually coming to Lagos to
have a showdown with you on when you were going to get married and give them
grandchildren when they had the accident that claimed their lives.
