Norway begs for Africa refugees
Prosperous European nation,
Norway, is presently begging for Africa refugees.
One of Africa’s biggest problems
currently is that of refugees, and Norway therefore saw it fit to come to their
aid by splashing NOK50m on the Gashora Transit Centre, Rwanda which is one of
the facilities Rwanda will use to process the 30,000 refugees and migrants from
Libya it has undertaken to receive in agreement with the African Union and
UNHCR.
And sequel to his country’s
financial support for the centre, Norway Minister of International Development,
Dag-Inge Ulstein, has visited Rwanda to inspect it.
And according to him: “I’ve been
very moved by the meetings I’ve had with Gashora’s inhabitants. They’ve been
living under atrocious and very dangerous conditions in Libya. The stories they
tell are of violence, torture, fear and hunger. Some of them’ve been victims of
human trafficking and abuse. It’s our duty to help, and I urge other countries
to contribute too.”
Commending Rwanda, he said, “Rwanda
is setting a good example with this initiative. The transit centre is providing
important assistance for migrants and refugees in the region, and Rwanda is
thus helping to solve this acute crisis. I’m pleased that next year Norway will
take in several hundred refugees and migrants from Libya from this transit
centre and a similar transit centre in Romania.”
Norway is the first country to provide
support for the centre.
Once it’s fully operational, it
will house 500 people.
At present there are 189
residents, 79 of whom are unaccompanied minors. Most of the residents are from
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia.
