Sudan millions in grave danger
Millions of people are in grave
danger in Sudan due to erratic weather, multiple disease outbreaks and economic
crisis.
And the international community
need to come fast to their aid, says Mark Lowcock, United Nations Under-Secretary-General
for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
“It’s a crucial time for Sudan
and we must make sure that its people have their most basic needs met through
the international community urgently stepping up their support,” Lowcock said
at the end of a two-day mission to Sudan, his first visit to the country since
the formation of a transitional government in August 2019.
While conflict is still a major
driver of Sudan’s humanitarian issues, and has led to nearly two million people
displaced in the Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas, it has significantly
reduced in recent years.
The deepening economic crisis and
the climate crisis now pose serious problems and more than 8.5 million people,
almost all of the population, require food, nutrition, protection or other
assistance to survive.
