African Migration Observatory! Data gatherer or money launderer?
One of Africa’s biggest problems is migration.
This is a known fact, just as it’s known as well that the migration desire of almost every African to Europe, America or Canada is due basically to the bad leadership of Africa by its sons and daughters at the helm of its affairs.
And so desperate are Africans to
relocate to these developed regions that they do so at great risk to their
lives: stowing away in ships, travelling through the desert, crossing the sea
and other deadly methods that lead to casual death.
Now, in a bid to understand this
embarrassing African migration problem better, the African Union has decided to
locate an African Migration Observatory in Rabat, Morocco that will gather all
the necessary data so it can make informed migration policies.
Sadly, even before it kicks off,
it’s already obvious that this observatory will be a waste of time and effort
or more accurately, another way to siphon funds by Africa’s leaders.
The basic question the AU should
be demanding its answer is why Africans desire to migrate in the first instance.
The AU should be asking why
Europeans and Americans don’t really desire to visit Africa, how much more
migrate here.
Since there was a time Africans didn’t
care about even visiting Europe, America, Asia so much so that Nigerians didn’t
require a visa to visit the UK, what went wrong that they now require a visa
that is very expensive yet denied to them majorly?
When Muhammar Gadaffi was in
charge of Libya, it was so prosperous that someone who once resided there said
Libyans didn’t have any desire or reason to migrate as they everything the
developed world had and when some of them even visited Europe, they mostly cut
short their trips because while there, they didn’t see virtually any difference
between it and Libya.
So, will this observatory serve
the purpose it’s publicly meant for which is to gather migration data?
No.
But will it serve its sinister
purpose which is to launder funds?
Oh yes.
So if the AU is really serious
about curbing migration appropriately, then what it should be doing is making Africa
better for Africans to genuinely love and stay in through taking the
appropriate steps which are well known to everyone.
Long live Africa.
