New player aims for Nigeria entertainment disruption
Digitally at least, it’s in need of
that disruption considering that digital is now a vital part of entertainment
but the entertainers and the government cannot be said to be really benefitting
from it the way they should right now.
The music sector is more about
free downloads, the movie sector is not faring better with illegal uploads and
the bloggers, writers and authors are also suffering as well with unchecked plagiarism
the order of the day.
The arrival of the latest player
in Nigerian entertainment, Mondia’s Monsooq, might just end up being its saving
grace, though.
Mondia is a leading mobile
technology company specialising in the marketing and distribution of digital
content, and its Monsooq is a digital platform which allows users pay only for
the time they spend consuming content so they’re not required to take out any
contracts or subscriptions.
It’s a unique time-based model that
allows them to buy entertainment time just as they would mobile airtime and use
that time to consume any content they choose, including movies, sports,
educational content, books, series, games and music – all on a single,
convenient, end-to-end entertainment platform at the affordable rate of twenty
naira per hour.
Whether a consumer wishes to play
a game for 30 minutes while commuting, or binge a new series for six hours,
they are able to load that amount of time to their profile securely using a
debit or credit card. And when their time ends, they simply top up with more.
One thing is certain.
If Monsooq is able to operate
successfully in the country along the parameters stated above, it will change
the entertainment for good as creators will start getting paid for their
content and other digital platforms exploiting them will fizzle out as creators
will stop dealing with them when there’s a credible platform they can partner
with.
Likewise, digital platforms that
want to survive will adopt the Monsooq strategy and this will only be good news
for the entertainment sector as content will finally be protected from online pirates.
So, will Monsooq be able to turn
around Nigeria’s digital entertainment sector for the best?
Let’s wait and see.
