Studies confirm HIV poverty
Poverty is a disease, so a saying
allegedly goes.
And it’s quite understandable really
in a world where money calls the shots between individuals, organisations and
countries.
Further proof of its terrible
effects which led to it being referred to as a disease is a recent report which
disclosed that it also fuels the spread of the dreaded HIV.
A study conducted in Eswatini
revealed that cash transfers aimed at keeping adolescent girls and young women
in school and giving them greater financial independence resulted in the odds
of them becoming HIV-positive as 25% lower than for those who were not eligible
for the incentive.
Studies from Lesotho, Malawi and Tanzania
also show that cash transfers help young people, especially girls, stay in
school longer and do better in their studies.
The studies also indicated that
cash grants that enable girls to continue their schooling also delay their
sexual debut, increase their use of health services, reduce teen pregnancies
and early marriage, and promote safer sexual behaviour.
