Tinubu, Atiku candidacies prove democracy gradually taking root in Nigeria

Atiku Abubakar
Now that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has democratically won the presidential candidature of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the implication of his emergence is worth noting.

The best countries in the world are democratically governed and Nigeria’s problems have stemmed from the fact that the military was always taking over power which led to breaks in the country’s democracy and didn’t allow it to take the root that would have brought about the necessary development.

But since democracy returned in 1999, it has been growing stronger by the day and the presidential primaries of the two major political parties, PDP and APC, for next year’s election have proven that.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

While Atiku Abubakar first emerged for the Peoples Democratic Party, Tinubu just followed suit for the APC and both their emergences are symbolic for the fact that none of their fellow contestants can complain of being cheated.

They both emerged in free, fair and open primaries which is what democracy is all about and makes it obvious that the country’s democracy will keep growing stronger thereby and soon it will be indeed a case of, by and for the people.
