Jane recognised his reaction. It
wasn’t the first time it would happen to her, even with her friends, so she was
used to it. “Is anything wrong with wearing Jo-Jo?” she teased him still.
Uba returned to himself. “No. Not
at all.” Then with a sort of pleading tone: “So how about you and me together
at the Blue Dollar tonight? Please say yes, babe.”
Jane had a soft spot for Uba so
loved it that he was trying to come into her life. She even loved his approach.
Every method imaginable. Subtle, diplomatic, confident, bold. He had all the
tricks up his sleeves. She almost said yes but decided to hold out a little
longer.
She was thinking of how to
wrangle her way out of the spot – not an easy thing to do when you actually
like the man interested in you and you’re already running out of logical
excuses – when the parking sounds of the boss’ Lincoln Navigator jeep wafted to
them.
“Saved by the boss from the
baddest boy in the office,” she said instead.
“But not for long,” Uba said,
sliding off her desk. The import of her statement struck him. “Don’t tell me I
got rivals right here on my own turf.”
“What do you think?”
“That you shouldn’t listen to
them. OK? I got good plans for you.”
“The Main Man, with two capital
Ms, will soon be here,” she reminded him.
“OK. OK. Don’t ram it down my
throat. I’ll see you later.”
He left her office with a brisk
step.
It just wouldn’t do for the boss
to meet them flirting early on a Monday morning.

Uba finally set foot in his own
office after having been in the building for almost eighteen minutes. VI had
four C&F agents. Their desks with their name plates on it were positioned
in the four corners of their office, and only one of them had someone seated at
it.
The person, Kanmi Adeleke, spoke
first. “Good morning, boy. Seems you now get to the office just before the boss
arrives.”
It was a friendly jibe and Uba
was receptive to it. “Hi, fine boy. As long as I still best him by tiny, micro,
milli, whatever seconds even, it’s an okay with me. You?”
“Sure thing, boy. Actually saw in
the register you came ahead of me. So where were you? Don’t tell me. With Jane,
right?”
