Africa's group stage success at FIFA World Cup 2026! Africa's or FIFA's?

Much has been made of the fact that nine out of ten African teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026 progressed from the group stage.

According to multiple reports, Africa made history with the feat.

And that is undeniable.

But on closer reflection, is it actually Africa that made history or FIFA that expanded the World Cup to give many more countries the opportunity to participate and thereby enabled Africa to make this so-called history?

That is just a no-brainer.
