Why Seun Kuti is ashamed of his father, the legendary, globally renowned Afrobeat music creator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti’s recent appearance on Ada’s Room confirmed one thing.

He’s one of the nepo babies in the world who are ashamed of the leverage their successful parent or parents gave them in life.

All over the world, nepo babies are not being taught that being children of successful parents is not by their own choice and therefore no fault of theirs.

Rather, they are made to feel that they only achieve what they do or are only what they are in life because of their successful parent(s).

The irony of it all is that if many of those who accuse them of that are given a choice themselves of having wealthy parent(s), they wouldn’t think twice before accepting it.

For a nepo baby like Davido, he doesn’t have any problem with it so people find it difficult to accuse him of being a nepo baby because he goes around proudly announcing it himself with his self-chosen nickname, Omo Baba Olowo which means child of a wealthy man.

For others like KieKie and DJ Cuppy, they go around defending the indefensible by saying that they are working hard themselves and their fathers are not doing their work for them like KieKie said one time.

And on Ada’s Room, Seun Kuti, who has at one time boasted of how he still makes money from his father, Fela, several years after his death that shook the world, surprisingly boarded the negatively-minded nepo babies’ train when he said that the great Fela wouldn’t have been successful if he wasn’t a nepo baby himself and that it isn’t Fela playing his saxophone for him, singing for him and so on.

His sudden, unexpected castigation of his legendary father however made one thing very obvious.

Nepo babies are positively or negatively minded depending on how successful they are in life.

In the case of Fela, whilst his son, Seun, claims that even Fela’s father and grandfather, Seun’s grandfather and great grandfather respectively, were also musically successful, Fela so eclipsed their success musically and globally that people don’t even remember that his parents were titans themselves and that his mother was a very great woman, the first to drive a car in Ogun State or in Nigeria as a whole and she also organized women against unfair taxes and fought for their rights to vote.

And in the case of Davido, as a nepo baby from a very wealthy family that had a name but preferred to stay off the social radar, Davido put them onto it so successfully that his fame became the defining one for his family.

So, because Fela and Davido were able to surpass the heights of their parents, being nepo babies wasn’t an issue for them.

Rather, it was a badge of honor.

But for KieKie, Seun Kuti, DJ Cuppy and so on worldwide that are yet to truly do something really great by themselves, they go around defending themselves unnecessarily that they are a success in their own right, that their father or mother is not the one doing for them what they do and so on.

My advice to them!

Stop doing so.

Embrace your parents’ success.

Bask in it.

Boast of it like Davido.

It’s your God-given right so enjoy it and never be ashamed of it as those questioning you about it are only jealous of you and want to be in your shoes.
